For whom: Edirne Keşan Kızkapan Village
With whom: University students
When: 2013
We realized a design workshop with support of Kalebodur in Kızkapan Village of Keşan on July 20, 2013 as a part of the Abandoned Rural Schools Kızkapan Project. The workshop was divided into two teams as 14 university students and 14 associate members.
The aim of the Kızkapan workshop was producing ideas on how to recreate the Kızkapan school, where we had taken measurements and documentation in previous visits. In this direction, the first team of university students is divided into 5 groups, considering the school building and the garden together and creating ideas about the future use scenarios and the architectural interventions that will take place in the garden. As the villagers of Kızkapan asked for a practice area for agriculture and animal breeding, the volumes are planned to be combined together or preserved to be workshop areas. Besides, some other ideas such as enhancing the roof structure were proposed. As the building had no water, electrical or heating system, some propositions about these systems were also considered. On the other hand, the on-site realization of the workshop was important to see that the villagers from all ages use the school garden at all hours of the day, and that the current use should be continued and improved after the transformation.
The second team consisting of members of the association realized a field study with the aim of talking with the residents of Kızkapan Village, gathering the thoughts about the future of the village, documenting the built and natural environment of the village.
In these studies, which were conducted both by visiting the village and its surroundings and by talking to the people who came to the school garden during the day, many original data belonging to Kızkapan were collected and this data was compiled as a fanzine on the way to the workshop. You can reach our fanzine here.
At the end of the workshop, a presentation was made on Tuesday, July 23, at Kale Levent Merkez, İbrahim Bodur Conference Hall, where the ideas of the university students presented.
Following the presentation which is beneficial in terms of getting comments on the emerging ideas and listening to the new views, Kızkapan project studies continue with the regular meetings that take place together with the workshop participants.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Kalebodur for the contribution of the Kızkapan Workshop.
