The “Travelling Library” workshop was held at Mardin Artuklu University Faculty of Architecture between 1-3 March 2013 with the participation of Yelta Köm, Elif Tan, Canan Erten and Emre Gündoğdu in behalf of HiM (Architecture for All). The workshop was carried out with first year architecture students to discuss the Project II theme “Uncanny Situations in the Country” through a travelling library design. The first day of the workshop started with a brainstorming about the production and distribution of knowledge, the ephemerality of knowledge etc. and the students explained their individual travel routes, which were produced before the workshop, in 2 min. presentations. At the end of the day, students formed groups in order to produce a common travel route and their design approach for the library.
On the second day of the intensive workshop, three evaluation meetings were held by the groups. On the first evaluation, the groups shared their common routes and their statements towards the city in relation with the mobile library. On the second evaluation, groups improved their designs and represented their spatial proposals through plans, elevations, models etc. In the last presentation, the groups deepened their designs with technical drawings and schematic descriptions as well as 1/5 and 1/10 scaled models in the light of the second evaluation.
On the last day of the workshop, students presented their fanzines which were produced according to their statements for the city, which were developed in the first two days of the workshop. Travelling Library was a three days long intensive and productive workshop for first year architecture students with continuous discussions, productions and feedbacks. We would like to thank all the members of the Architecture Department of Mardin Artuklu University who supported and hosted us kindly.
